Charlie and the Chocolate Factory–Roald Dahl

Contrary to what I’ve been writing about Roald Dahl’s books on here (those were the questionable ones to be sure) I do actually enjoy his writing. It is not really for toddlers, but I should’ve probably knew they weren’t going to be. My bad.

However, this book was totally lovely! Just as I remember it.

Funny story: One of my cousins that I look after, his school makes it mandatory to go to the library (as they should) and one day they were having a Free Books day for the old books to leave the school. Everyone got to take home whatever they wanted. He chose ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. It was busted and old and has an old school hardcover.

He thought it was really cool that there was even a library card in the back with all these peoples names on them.

I read through them and realized not only did I start recognizing the names of some of the students, but I recognized their handwriting! Some of the names it was hard not to given that they had written down their quite obvious nicknames. And in between all those was a name written in in pencil:

“Allison”. Full with the funny ‘A’ I used to do and my attempt at cursive.

I had read that book when I was his age and now he was holding a piece of my history. How weird is that? Weird and cool.

Anyway, THIS is a safe book to read to your kids. It’s just as sweet as we remember and quirky too. Definitely pass this one down, or snuggle up with your kids for it.

Work it Out Wednesday

Hello fellow humans:

As you may have noticed (if you follow my Instagram stories or have seen me try to sit in a chair lately without making a sound) I have started the process of working out again.

Ugh. I’d be super annoyed, but I do this to myself. I genuinely forget to look after my own body because I spend my entire day worrying about someone else’s and then when I go home I’m too tired to do much of anything besides watch something on Netflix while I sew things for other people.

My body is one of the most neglected things in my life. Besides I guess my love life. But that’s a whole other story.

Anyway, once again, in an attempt to hold myself accountable I will be crying to you every Wednesday now in my newest series “Work it Out Wednesdays” where I will update my progress and talk about my new boyfriends.

Yes, that’s plural. And a joke.

My new boyfriends are my “trainer” John and Sam Heughan. You read that second name right. The guy who plays Jamie Fraser on ‘Outlander’. They have a program called ‘My Peak Challenge’ and they set you up for the whole year of meal planning and working out, including videos where you get to see Sam teasing John while they work out. It’s magical.

Especially since they are both Scottish, so it’s nice to listen to as well.

My progress report this week is: I’m sore, but it’s not too bad. And I actually look forward to working out every evening now because it’s a plan, and it’s for me. One of the only things I do that’s 100% for me. Which is nice. I’ve been holding onto my New Years Resolutions. I’ve faltered twice in one thing (which is the Tim Hortons, but I didn’t buy it, someone else did for me and I needed to see my friend and that’s literally the only place open passed 10 pm around here. And the kid didn’t eat his donut, and I was super hungry…) and a handful of times in the other (the piano, I can’t seem to find the right time to practice, so I’m moving the piano to the basement today in hopes of getting over my fear of playing with other people in the house.) and besides that I’ve stayed off the scale, which has been lovely. I’m not beating myself up every day three times a day.

I’ve also managed to not go on a diet, which has also felt great! I’m eating better and there’s not so much pressure to be perfect at something.

Anyway, I have to get to work, but I hope you are all having a great week and keeping hold of your resolutions!

(Also, my ‘Be kinder’ one needs some work. But hey, it’s a work in progress and that’s okay.)

sTori Telling–Tori Spelling

Okay look…I can’t explain why I picked this one up. I had zero interest in Tori Spelling, her career, or anything that’s ever happened to her. I bought this at a thrift store because I like to read incredibly random biographies now. And this took the cake on random because I had never really given Tori Spelling a second thought.

BUT…I’m glad I read this.

I genuinely enjoyed this autobiography!

She was funny, self deprecating, and (felt like) completely honest about her love life, career, and relationship with her parents. She totally realized that she was a product of nepotism in her career and tried to steer away from it and work on her own without the help of her dad. (An exception would be 90210, but she auditioned and worked hard to get that role.)

I’m looking forward to reading more of her work because she’s actually incredibly funny.

This was a great summer read, it was quick, light, and made me feel like she was talking directly to me over a glass of mojitos.

And I don’t even drink mojitos.

The Walking Dead Comp. 2–Robert Kirkman and co.

I’m a huge Walking Dead fan. I really love the show, so finally reading the comics was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. And I’m really glad that my sister decided to buy the compendiums/ask for them for Christmas so that I could save my own money and siphon off them.

That being said, a lot of shit goes down. I really like reading these, but it (obviously) gets confusing reading them and watching the show.

Things don’t necessarily happen to the character in the comics that they did to on the show, which is totally fine. I like being surprised!

I really loved this, but the quality of the drawings went downhill after Tony Moore left them. Which makes me really sad because they were amazing to begin with and now I’m having issues telling who is who and “Is that Glenn or is that Rick? Is that Laurie? Is…that Maggie? Wtf is happening.” I can determine which characters are doing what half the time.

Confusing, but great storyline. Stuff happens very fast. So fast it’s kind of shocking, but I get that they are graphic novels and that makes sense for them to be like Information: BAM BAM BAM.

George’s Marvellous Medicine–Roald Dahl

Sigh.

Here’s another interesting book by Roald Dahl. And wildly inappropriate for a kid. I have to keep reminding myself that these are not meant for Daryl’s age group (Being 3 years old.) . That they are meant for older kids. But I also don’t appreciate what this one was saying to that age group either.

This is about George. George’s grandmother is a bit of an intolerable shrew.

All this woman does is complain and treat people like garbage. She talks down to everyone, she yells at them, and is a complete and utter unappreciative …well…asshole.

So I don’t blame George for thinking that maybe the old hag could use something to make her more pleasant.

Thus he creates his ‘Marvellous Medicine’.

Which includes things from the kitchen, things from the barn, things from the bathroom. I’m talking perfume, horse pills, toilet bowl cleaner, various things from around the house.

Most of which aren’t safe for people to be ingesting.

Which is why I was like “Oh Hell no Roald Dahl. What are you telling kids here!!!” I could understand if it was like peppers or flowers or something that wouldn’t cause a person actual harm, but the list of things this guy included shouldn’t be anywhere near an old persons stomach. Let alone a kids hands.

It was supposed to be magical, but I just found it disturbing.

Happy New Year!

Hello Sports fans!

Hope everyone had an amazing Christmas and New Years, and if you’re anything like me that means you cleaned your room and watched lame movies.

I never go out for New years for several reasons:

1) I’m usually snowed in. I live in a small town that seems to constantly be at the vortex of snowstorms. Even if a place is 15 minutes away, I can’t seem to find my way out of town! Brutal.

2) I spend A LOT of time with humans over the month of December. Between my birthday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, Boxing Day, and having the “time off” from working I usually try to see a handful of friends in the process. Which leaves me wanting to be alone. Nothing shameful about it, I’m an ambivert but after so many days and weekends in a row of peopling, I need to be alone. So I usually do that New Years since my friends are all coupled up that night and it’s the perfect time to be quiet.

3) January is a hellstorm of family birthdays. I figure in at least 8? Two of which are my Nonno’s and fathers, where I make apple turnovers for my Nonno and have to attend at least two parties. Then there’s February where it’s the same deal. And March. And April. Good god. Why do I know so many people??? Haha

Anyway, genuinely needed some self-care this holiday season (as I’ve been forced to realize via throwing my neck out and falling asleep in the bathtub for half an hour yesterday.) and hope you guys got to that as well.

Personally, I’m excited for this week to be over as well so that everything goes back to normal and I can sort out some stuff for my business and make some new and exciting cross stitches and venture into a whole other part of my business.

Also, regarding resolutions, I’ve decided that each month I will set a goal (As I did last year and it worked out okay instead of putting all the pressure on the first month!). This month has several goals as it’s the first and they all go hand in hand to start up the next few months.

  1. I will not weigh myself this month. I don’t want to start out my New Year obsessing about my weight. It’s tedious.
  2. I will not diet this month. And maybe not next month either. I’m so sick of “being on a diet”. Even if I don’t follow it it’s starting to bug me that I’ve basically been on a diet since I was 12.
  3. I’m joining a squat challenge. I want to improve not lose my ass.
  4. I won’t go to Tim Hortons for a month. So far so good. I have a serious addiction to their sugary drinks and donuts. Time to stop it.
  5. I will read more. I’ve been stuck on the same book for three months, which is not like me, but I’ve always been insanely busy.
  6. I will practice piano more. What the hell is the point of paying for lessons if I never practice and never move forward?
  7. Improve my business.
  8. Be kinder.

 

There you have it. Keep moving forward!
